“What’s your Why?” The Secret to the Hawks Success

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s men’s basketball team is on some kind of turnaround season. The Hawks pulled off another big road win Monday night to improve to 14-12, and have a chance this weekend to reach the 15 win mark when they host their rivals Delaware State University. That would match the total number of wins for the Hawks the past three seasons combined. So what’s been the secret to their success? A simple question.

What’s your ‘why’?”

Your ‘why’ is the drive to complete. The purpose for playing at UMES. For some players it’s to be an inspiration to family members, to prove something, to be an example that goals can be reached. For everyone though, it is the individual reason they are willing to sacrifice for each other, and most importantly, for Head Coach Bobby Collins. Coach Collins asks every recruit and every member of his team, what their why is. He want’s to know if they are committed to the system, the program, and each other. And once he is sure you are, you holds you to that standard of excellence, not only as a player, but as a man.

That leadership and support has led to the team buying into his message, and coming together as one. Now that they have formed as a team, the next question is how far can they go.

The answer there is still unknown, but this group believes in each other, and that’s start.
