Virginia lawmakers legislation tighten ethics laws

Virginia Lawmakers passed legislation today tightening ethics laws on public officials in government.

Some legislators expressed concern that lawmakers were overreacting to the media and public response to former Governor Bob McDonnell’s corruption trial.

However, the legislation passed by overwhelming margins it has reduced the current $250 cap on gifts to public officials to $100.

The legislation has also eliminated the current law that places no cap on intangible gifts like meals, travel and entertainment.
