Town of Georgetown hosting shoe drive to benefit WaterStep

One local town is looking to help people around the world, have safe drinking water, and they need your help.

Now through March 16th, The Town of Georgetown is hosting a shoe drive for WaterStep, which will bring long-lasting water solutions for developing countries. Officials say that shoes of any size and condition can be dropped off at Town Hall, on The Circle, weekdays between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

Donations will be counted on the last day of the drive, and will then be donated to WaterStep. The organization will then sell the shoes to an exporter, raising money to give safe water solutions to people in third world communities and disaster hit areas. After being sold, the shoes are repurposed and resold, creating affordable footwear to those in need, keeping 30,000 pounds a month of waste out of landfills.

Georgetown is working along with Emma Rider, a Delaware 4-H’er from Bridgeville, who earned the prestigious 2014 national gold medal for the Jefferson Awards Foundation for her participation in the Lead360 challenge last year.

Emma and the Town are hoping to fill a tractor trailer by the end of March, and are daring SCAT members to participate with a Shoe Drive Challenge. For more information or to get your collection boxes, contact Emma Rider 302-542-1485, Mayor Bill West 302-236-9955 or Town Hall 302-856-7391.
