Town of Dewey contemplates major property purchase

The Town of Dewey Beach is mulling over a contract to buy two lots off of Route 1.
The lots hold buildings that could replace the current town hall. Town commissioners say they’re cramped in the current space, and believe the growing town needs a building that could serve as a welcome center, parking center, jail holding cell and essentially serve as a multi- purpose hub for Dewey Beach.
Diane Hanson, the Mayor of Dewey Beach says, “This is a big decision for our town. We do want people to give us public input. We want people to understand that we’re not trying to rush this. However, we heard from both realtors that if we didn’t move forward with this, we would lose the property we’re considering.”
If the Town of Dewey Beach purchases the lots, it would cost them $875,000.
