Police cruiser crash investigated

Delaware State Police are currently investigating a two-vehicle crash north of Lewes on Monday. Police say the incident occurred around 3:50 PM Monday, when a trooper was driving his patrol vehicle northbound on Coastal Highway approaching Willow Creek Road. Police say a 2010 Toyota Avalon, operated by Leroy W. Basher, 70, of Millsboro stopped at the posted stop sign to cross Coastal Highway.
Troopers say after coming to a stop, Basher proceeded across the northbound lanes and into the path of the police cruiser. The trooper apparently attempted to avoid Basher’s vehicle, but struck him on the left front of the driver’s side. Reports say after the collision, the Toyota slid into the center median and came to a stop.
Reports say the 24-year-old trooper was properly restrained and uninjured. However a A 51-year-old female passenger in the state police vehicle was properly restrained but was transported to Beebe Healthcare where she was treated and released with minor non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say Basher was properly restrained and also transported to Beebe Healthcare where his was admitted with apparent non-life-threatening injuries. He was cited for Failure to Remain Stopped at a Stop Sign. The accident is still under investigation.
