Police Call Game As Fight Breaks Out In Stands At Dover
For a quarter and a half, the Dover vs. Caesar Rodney game looked to be another normal, classical rivalry game between the schools eight minutes apart. All looked normal, with Dover leading 23-13, until with less than three minutes to go til half, a major melee broke out in the stands behind the Caesar Rodney bench, prompting police to clear the court and send teams to the locker room.
Before the disturbance, Dover held a 13-10 lead after one, and went on a 10-3 run, before the game was called. Dover’s 23-13 lead was courtesy of Jordan Allen’s 9 points, but Allen had just picked up his third foul. Jorden Downes had a team high 8 points to lead CR, who’s comeback attempt was just about to get away until things went sour in the crowd.
Police would go on to kick out the perpetrators, as Dover High staff attempted to calm the crowd and get people back in their seats. After about a 15 minute break in the game, referees, coaches and teams entered the court again, to begin warming back up. Less than one minute later, another fight broke out opposite of the stands of the first melee, prompting referees and police to call off the game.
There was no official word on when the game would be made up.
