Maryland lawmakers push for reforms in criminal justice system

Some Maryland lawmakers are pushing for reforms within the criminal justice system.

One measure would allow the state parole commission to review the statuses of people who are still in prison at the age of 65.

If the prisoner is suffering certain mental or medical disabilities, for example terminal cancer or dementia, they could be released.

In Wicomico County this is already happening. State’s Attorney Matt Maciarello says it makes sense that the entire state follow suit.

He goes on, “It makes sound fiscal sense to do an early release for that individual, especially when you look at our budget shortfalls. I’m glad that it seems like our government now is looking at all sectors to determine where can we save the tax payer money. I’m always in favor of that.”

Another measure aims to reduce recidvisim when criminals relapse into criminal behavior.

The bill would call for better strategies for those leaving prison to re-enter society, and would also create a council to study how to spend less taxpayer money on corrections.
