Longtime Georgetown mayor dies at 89

The former mayor of Georgetown who for many years served as Sussex County’s town crier, announcing how the county had voted in each election, has died.
    
W. Layton Johnson died Thursday at the age of 89. The mayor of Georgetown from 1962 to 1988, he was also the Sussex County town crier from 1992 to 2012.
    
As town crier, Johnson would stand on a courthouse balcony on Return Day, two days after voting, to announce how Sussex County had voted.
