“Let Summer Be Summer” bill to be head Thursday in MD

“Let summer be summer”, that’s what House Bill 389 is saying in Maryland. The much-debated measure would allow school to start after labor day.
On Thursday, the bill will be heard in Annapolis, where a number of sponsors like Senator Jim Mathias and Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan will speak. This hearing comes after Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot released a poll Wednesday indicating 72% of Marylanders support starting school after Labor Day.
Mayor Meehan tells 47 ABC, one of the primary hurdles this bill has to clear is the board of education. They are apparently worried about the impact starting school later has on education.
Meehan says, lawmakers and educators can work together to avoid any impact on education.
“We’re only talking about three to five days here,” says Meehan, “We certainly think this is something that, all those bright minds are teaching all those students…all those boards get together, we should be able to figure out a way to accommodate this.”
House bill 389 comes after a governor’s task force recommended a post-Labor Day school start last year.
