Laurel Holds On Late To Take Out Rival Delmar, Completing Season Sweep

The Laurel Bulldogs boys basketball team punched their ticket to the big dance, defeating rival Delmar 62-61 Tuesday night.

The game was a back and forth affair all night, with Delmar leading 14-13 after one, and Laurel leading 28-27 at the break. Senior Larry Ennis led the Wildcats with 14 points at the half. For Laurel, Gary Warren and Ray Pacheco led with 10, and 9 points respectively.

In the third, Delmar caught fire from behind the arc, pouring in five three pointers in eight minutes, including three by Ennis. Still, the Wildcats would only bring a 44-43 lead into the final quarter. Laurel would get 19 points in the final frame, and lead by as many as seven in the fourth, before Delmar’s attempted comeback fell just short.

Laurel was led by guard Gary Warren’s team-high 18, with forward Ray Pacheco scoring 15 and Chuck August pouring in 11. Delmar guard Larry Ennis led Delmar with a game-high 32 points.

With the win, Laurel clinches a birth in the Delaware State tournament. Early indication is even with the loss, Delmar still has a chance to make the tournament.
