EPA completes final phase of Dover Gas Light Company Superfund Site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has completed the third and final phase of its field investigation of the Dover Gas Light Company Superfund Site.

The investigation started nearly thirty years ago after toxic contamination was discovered in Dover’s groundwater that could present future health risks.

Although this water is contaminated, the EPA says it does not pose a threat to residents.

Bonnie Smith with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says, “The Dover drinking water will remain unaffected by the groundwater contamination. Vapor intrusion from the groundwater doesn’t present a health concern. We’re making sure public health is protected in the short term and that this clean-up will have a long term remedy for this site.”

The environmental protection agency says they are currently working on which clean-up plan for the site will work best. They say this can be a lengthy process, but once they arrive at that decision, they will present their findings to the community.
