Dover Takes Thriller Over Smyrna

The Dover boys basketball team pulled out a thrilling win Monday night over Smyrna 72-68 in double overtime. The win improves the Senators to 7-7, while the loss drops the Eagles to 10-4.

The teams would find themselves in a battle from the start, despite the Eagles being shorthanded, playing without arguably their best player Stedman Kpana who was sidelined with an injury. Dover would take a 26-24 lead into the locker room. The scoring would heat up in the second half for the Eagles as Ja’Vier Worthy would step up for Smyrna, finishing with a team high 16. The Eagles would grab a small lead, but Jordan Allen would lead the Senators back. HE would consistently attack the basket, and worked his way to the line 10 times on his way to a game high 28 points. Dover was down 1 with 8.2 seconds left when Terrance Woodlin would draw a foul and go to the line. After missing the first, he would make the second to tie the game. The Eagles wasted no time, bringing the ball up court where Donte Ritchie was fouled at mid court. He would miss both free throws, but the rebound would be deflected out of bounds to Smyrna. Then a perfectly executed in bounds play would lead to a lay up attempt that Woodlin would make an incredible play defensively to block it off the back board. The Senators full court attempt would be off and we would head to overtime.

There, the teams would again find themselves in a tight one. Eagles were down 2 with 15 seconds left when Worthy would be fouled on an in bounds play on the sideline, and would connect on the 2 free throws to tie the game again. Tre’vonne Moore would have a shot at the buzzer and a chance to win it for Dover but it would be off the mark, and we would head to double overtime. There, Dover grabbed a small lead thanks to several free throws from Allen. Up 2 late, Allen would knock down a free throw to make it a 3 point lead with 12 seconds left. Smyrna would take the ball to the hoop, but miss the lay in to seal the win.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they host Milford, while the Senators return to the court Thursday when they host Cape Henlopen.
