Crop insurance deadline approaches

A heads up to Maryland farmers, there’s only two weeks left to purchase crop insurance.
March 15th is the deadline for most spring-planted crops. These crops include things like corn and different types of beans.
The insurance protects against losses due to hail, wind, droughts, excessive moisture and natural disasters.
One local farmer tells 47ABC droughts are one of the biggest issues farmers on the shore face. He says insurance can be helpful, but there are still folks out there willing to take the risk.
Charles Wright, a farmer from Hebron says, “If a farmer has really good cash flow, and if he has irrigation, he might say he’s going to take the risk upon himself. In the event of a bad weather year, he can weather basically the storm.”
A list of crop insurance agents are available at all USDA Service Centers.
