Chincoteague in the running for “Coolest Small Town in America”

It’s already been ranked America’s Happiest Seaside Town. Now the Sandy beaches, locally owned stores and those famous ponies could get Chincoteague Virginia another superlative title; “The Coolest Small Town in America.”

“It makes us think what we’re doing here is working,” says Chincoteague Mayor John Tarr. “We have a really diverse group of things that people could do when they visit here and that’s what we think sets us apart. even being in the running you know the top 15 has been a blessing.”

Another Delmarva town was similarly blessed last year — when Berlin, Maryland took home the title — handed out by Budget Travel after a public online voting period.
“I think we’re very similar to Berlin we have similar types of shops that sell unique items,” says Evelyn Shotwell Executive Director of the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce. “I think it will definitely help improve visitation to the area, be a big boost to hopefully the shoulder season months when it’s a little slower and a little harder to get folks to come.”

While residents love Chincoteague for its pristine beaches and delicious seafood, there’s so much more to do in this quaint little town.

Tarr says, “We see winning the coolest town as you can come and bring your kids here you can come and see Nasa, you can come see the beach, we have arts here we have anew theatre group so there’s a lot going on.”

Town officials say they hope that by being in the running, it will establish to visitors and residents alike, that Chinoteague is and always will be a relaxing, family-oriented town.
