Cape May- Lewes Ferry is back up and running; travelers express excitement

The Cape May- Lewes Ferry was shut down for three days because cold temperatures froze the water.  It made the Delaware Bay impassable.

Jimmy Rizzo says, “Today I called at eight thirty. They told me the boat was running and I was like yay! I was so happy.”

The ice was so thick, that the ferry wasn’t able to travel through. Unfortunately, it caused an inconvenience to some of the folks 47ABC spoke with.

Sandra Gallo says, “It was the worst thing that ever happened. These kids had to drive from May’s Landing all the way around. It was horrible.”

Gallo’s daughter and granddaughter frequently travel from New Jersey on the ferry to visit her.

In Gallo’s 22 years of living in the Lewes area, she says she hasn’t witnessed anything like this before.

She continues,”Never ever, ever.”

Margaret Delury ended up missing her niece’s baby shower because the ferry stopped running, but she says you can’t fight Mother Nature.

Delury goes on, “We’re used to it, it happens sometimes.”

Employees at the ferry agree. Apparently, the economic impact of being closed for three days wasn’t too bad since the ferry already has an abbreviated schedule for the winter.

Employees also say the safety of their passengers is what’s most important.

Rizzo whole heartedly agrees. Despite being held up in a hotel for the past three days waiting for the ferry to start moving again. His journey from Orlando to New Jersey which started on Thursday, is now complete.

Rizzo says, “I think they did a great job, I mean I would rather them be safe than sorry crossing the water.”

The Cape May- Lewes Ferry’s abbreviated winter schedule is available on their website, you can find it here.
