Caesar Rodney High School may be going to space

Students at Caesar Rodney High School are thinking way outside the box, or more like outside the globe. They’re hoping to send their science experiment to space.

William Mosher, an 11th grader at the school says, “The students could really pick whatever they wanted and test anything.”

The students are testing a chemical reaction in different environments. One takes place on Earth, the other takes place in space.

Dhruv Kumar, a 12th grader says, “The reaction is catalase mixing with hydrogen peroxide. This is a reaction that actually happens in the body. This is a reaction that happens all the time. We’re going to see if having no gravity has an effect on the rate of the reaction.”

The experiment will explore whether zero gravity affect how the molecules interact.

Clay Radford, is also in 12th grade at CRHS, “It’s kind of cool to find a way to apply what you’re learning in the classrooms and find some real world use for it.”

The students have already learned about writing the experiment just right. It has to meet certain NASA requirements.

Kyra Watson, 12th grader as well says, “We sent drafts, drafts, and drafts of how the procedure would go on until we perfected it to the way they wanted it to b

The Caesar Rodney Science Department selected this experiment from more than 300 others back in August and submitted it to NASA.

NASA approved it. The experiment can go to the International Space Station.
However, getting off the planet isn’t exactly a cheap ride. The school needs $30,000.

The school has set up a Go Fund Me page so the community can support them. If the school reaches their goal, their work may reach space.

12th grader Miranda Hunt says, “Our directions are going to be followed by these astronauts. Little old Delaware. They’re going to follow our high school student instructions that’s pretty cool.”
