WiHi Takes Down Bennett To Maintain Top Spot In Bayside
The Wicomico High School boys basketball team remained at the top of the Bayside Conference with a 65-55 home win over rival James M. Bennett. The win improves the Indians to 9-1, while the loss drops the Clippers to 6-5.
WiHi would jump out to the early lead after Nelson Brown was on fire to start. The senior connected on two long balls, and two lay ins in the opening quarter for 10 quick points. The Clippers would fight back in the second quarter though. Bennett enter the game short handed after a few players were suspended for the contest. On top of missing players, key starters Michael Jean-Charles and Barry Gaines Jr. were both battling injuries, but the Clippers make no excuses. Gaines would help them find themselves in a tight ball game at the half. His pressure defense with LJ Carter in the third quarter helped them trim the deficit to down to just 4.
They continued to fight in the fourth, but there Torrey Brittingham took over. The junior guard for WiHi connected on a three in transition, before knocking down another one in the corner. Then as the game was in still in the balance, Lionel Batson would come up with the biggest put back of the game to put it away.
Bennett returns to action Tuesday when they host Pocomoke, while WiHi returns to the court Friday when they travel to North Dorchester.
