University of Delaware women’s basketball falls to Elon

The University of Delaware hosted Elon in the Colonial Athletic Association opener – due to several turnovers, the Blue Hens dropped the opening game by ten points, 60 – 50.

Between the Blue Hens and Phoenix in the first half alone – both teams combined for 25 total turnovers. Elon came out hard early on in the game, but Delaware made a slow comeback to tie the game back up at 18; however, the Phoenix put themselves ahead before halftime 34 – 23.

Once the second half started, Delaware could not take the lead – trailing by six or more points throughout the game. However, a positive was that three players from the Blue Hens squad managed to score more than 12 points: Courtni Green (17 points), Erika Brown (13 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds), and Joy Caracciolo (12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals). With three players notching down double-digit points, this marks the 12th consecutive game having two or more players score double-digit points. Also, sophomore Hannah Jardine earned her second straight game with double figure rebounds with 10 against the Phoenix.

Meanwhile, Lauren Brown, Malaya Johnson, and Zora Stephenson all recorded 10 points for the Phoenix making up for half of their team’s overall points.

This was the first time both teams had ever met, and Delaware is now 11-3 all-time in CAA openers. With another great performance by Courtni Green, she is now in seventh place with 94 career baskets from the three spot.
