McDonnell free until prison sentence starts

A judge ruled Monday to allow former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell to remain free while he awaits his prison sentence. McDonnell will serve two years for corruption, starting on February 9.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Virginia said McDonnell’s appeal raises enough of a substantial question of law or fact that could warrant reversal or a new trial.

McDonnell and his wife took gifts and loans from local businesses during his time in office. Maureen is set to be sentenced on February 20.

The court originally shot down McDonnell’s request to stay free– but now they’re ruling that McDonnell is “not likely to flee or pose a danger to the safety of any other person.”
