Local experts offer safety tips in midst of weather threats

Even minor snowfall has the capability to cause a roadway disaster. For that reason,
officials from the Maryland State Highway Administration say it’s extremely important for drivers to slow down.

“People don’t anticipate the fact that the breaks and the rate at which they’re going to stop…isn’t going to be anywhere near normal. It’s not.” Explains Gee Williams.

It’s not just a matter of dangers on the road. With snowy conditions, can come power outages. Matt Likovich of Delmarva Power explains one reason is because snow on tree limbs can sag onto power lines, which can cause them to snap.

Icy conditions can also have an impact.

“You could have instances of just icing occuring on some of the infrastructure, which creates problems for the transformers.” Says Likovich.

Motorists have a role, too. Experts say often times, power outages can happen when a car skids into a utility pole. It’s another reason why they’re advising drivers to travel with extra precaution.

“If you’re going slow enough that it’s starting to  really annoy you…then you’re probably traveling at the right speed. If you’re traveling that seems comfortable for normal day-to-day traveling, you’re going too fast.” Advises Williams.

Though the storm in Delmarva is not expected to reach blizzard levels, experts also recommend assembling emergency kits. They recommend packing the kit with items including, but not limited to, flash-lights and medication.

According to Likovich, being prepared is one of the most important things a homeowner can do.

“Don’t be scrambling around after the lights go out to find all of these things. Take a few minutes to put your emergency storm kit together now.” Says Likovich.

In terms of power restoration, Likovich says Delmarva Power will restore facilities first, which include hospitals and police departments.
