Investigation for failed Terrier-Improved Rocket launch complete; Antares rocket update

The rocket failure investigation for Terrier-Improved Malemute Sounding rocket at Wallops Island is now complete.

The rocket which crashed into the Atlantic ocean just 19 seconds after lift off on July 3, 2014. Investigators determined that the rocket’s motor igniters failed during the mission and evidence reportedly revealed that the igniter wasn’t installed properly. According to NASA officials say, instructions on how to build and install the igniter are being updated to fix the issue.

The rocket was never recovered after the crash.

NASA officials say there has also been progress made on the Antares rocket explosion back in October. We’re told NASA’s “Medical and Environmental Management Division team” has filled in the crater left behind by the explosion. In November, the Incident Response Team found evidence of the refined kerosene fuel RP1 and perchlorate in nearby water and soil. Officials say recently, additional samples have been collected for further testing.

Results are expected to be released later this month.
