DSP urges drivers to stay safe in winter weather

Weather forecasts in Dover have State Police urging drivers to stay safe during the forecasted winter weather set to hit Delmarva.
Troopers say with the winter storm starting to impact the area Monday night into Tuesday, heavy snowfall and wintry mix could bring hazards to driver. State Police say this type of weather can cause unsafe road conditions along Delaware roadways.
Troopers are planning and preparing for the storm by patrolling the area, ready to assist disabled vehicles and manage roadway incidents during the predicted storm.
Police say most service calls during winter storms involved traffic accidents, and disabled and abandoned vehicles. Police say these issues cause a major problem for the Delaware Department of Transportation’s snow removal vehicles. So, troopers urge motorists to stay home if possible, and refrain from unnecessary travels.
For those who have to travel, troopers ask motorists to use extreme caution as weather conditions may change rapidly. Police say drivers should keep an eye on the road, and reduce speed and keep a safe driving distance to increase reaction time.
Police also say drivers should keep an eye on how their vehicles are running, and make sure vehicles have a full tank of gas if possible.
Drivers should have an emergency kit consisting of a blanket, bottled water, a cell phone, and a snack in case of emergency, according to police.
