Cape Henlopen wins in double overtime taking down Caesar Rodney
Cape Henlopen hosted Caesar Rodney in a double overtime battle between the two teams. The Vikings walked away with a 77-76 win, but the Riders would not make it easy.
Heading into halftime, Cape Henlopen had the 46-37 lead over Caesar Rodney, but the third quarter the intensity went up as both teams fought to get the win. However, the real story lied within the fourth quarter.
The Vikings headed into the fourth quarter with a five point lead, 55-50, but the game would take many turns from this point on. The Vikings began to lose control of the game as the players were not playing smart basketball and not connecting passes. The Riders were playing very hard defense and their athleticism became apparent especially in the fourth quarter. Caesar Rodney’s players were flying around the court and had all of the momentum especially after one of Cape’s players picked up a technical foul after kicking the ball in frustration to a call by the refs. The Riders took their biggest lead of the game 66-61 after the technical free throws, but the Vikings would not go out quietly. Cape Henlopen snuck back in the game with less than 30 seconds left and a turnover led to the tying bucket for the Vikings as time ran out to head into overtime.
The score table accidentally added the scoreboard to 65 points instead of 66 points for Cape Henlopen leading to confusion on what would happen as a result. However, the score table figured out the point situation and after two overtimes, the game was decided in a 77-76 win for Cape Henlopen.
