Bennett Gets Statement Win Vs. Washington
The James M. Bennett boys basketball team pulled out a statement win Tuesday by defeating Washington 99-89. The win improves the Clippers to 8-6, while the loss drops the Jaguars to 9-4.
The teams would exchange buckets early on with neither team being able to grab much of a lead. Going into the second half, the teams remained in a battle before Bennett was able to grab a 10 point lead by getting out into the open court. LJ Carter, Jorden Duffy and Barry Gaines would score several times in transition. Just when it seemed like they were going to open up a good lead, Washington came charging back. Shakur Cottman would force back to back turnovers, then knock down a deep three pointer, plus the foul to give his team the lead. Down 1 with seconds left, Duffy would fly the ball up the court and hit a floater at the buzzer to give his team a 1 point lead headed to the 4th.
There the Clippers would again open up a double digit lead after Michael Jean-Charles would go to work on the block. But again the Jags would fight back. This time it was Deshawn Parks who would score three consecutive times in the paint and got his team back within 4. But the Clippers would close out the game led by Gaines. He would score back to back lay ups in the games final couple minutes to put it away. Duffy finished with 28 points, while Gaines added 26 and Carter added 17 for Bennett, while Washington was led by Cottman’s 23, Marc Jones 21 and Parks’ 18 points.
Bennett returns to action Thursday when they travel to Snow Hill, while Washington returns to the court Thursday when they host Mardela.
