Armed campus police officers increase across the country

Almost every campus police officer at a public university now carries guns, pepper spray, and other weapons. This, according to a new Justice Department report.

Officers at public universities were more than twice as likely to carry guns, versus private schools.

Since the Virginia Tech Shootings in 2007, more schools have been jumping on board arming their officers. However, on the eastern shore, Salisbury University has been arming their officers for roughly twenty five years.

Lt. Brian Waler, the Associate Chief for the Salisbury University Police Department says, “Because of their training and how they’re armed, it kind of affords us an ability and a capability to respond and mitigate a dangerous situation that we otherwise couldn’t do.”

The Department of Justice states that schools are not required to report weapon use.
