11th Annual Battle By The Bay Underway

St. Michael’s High School opened up the 11th annual Battle by the Bay wrestling tournament Friday afternoon, with 14 teams attending the two-day event.

The tournament started up around 4 p.m., on Friday with a quick pin to begin the two-day event. Snow Hill’s Decklan Fisher only need 1:34 to take down St. Vincents Pallotti’s Myles Thomas in the 106-weight class. Still in the 106 class, Easton’s Dallas Strickland defeated Delmar’s Isaac O’Neal by decision, recording all his points in the third and final set to take the match, 6-0.

In the 120 class, Wicomico’s Bryan Rangel took on St. Vincents Pallotti’s Newt Davis. Putting up a good fight in the first set, Rangel would fall to Davis on a reversal in transition to a pin. In the 126 class, Cambridge’s Gavin Garcia and Easton’s Von Kirchoff needed to push the match all the way to a tiebreaker to decide the result. Garcia would record a point on an escape to take the match, 2-1.

The tournament continues into Saturday, with the first match starting up around 9:30 a.m. The championship matches are set to get underway around 4:30 p.m.
