WiHi remains undefeated with a big win over Pocomoke
The Pocomoke Warriors hosted the Wicomico Indians for some Friday night basketball. The rivalry between the two teams was brewing in that both teams were undefeated heading into Friday night’s match up. The Indians took it to the Warriors in a 68-62 victory and continue into the holiday break undefeated.
At half time, both teams were tied up at 39 points each after Smith hit a buzzer to finish off the clock. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Tribe took the momentum and got the job done to protect their perfect season.
In tonight’s match up, what most people will remember from the game was the amount of fouls called, which ultimately led to both teams having a hard time finding a pace to the game. The frustration displayed by the players was evident even when fouls were being called on the other team – these guys just wanted to play without stopping for fouls and free throws. Also, another factor in tonight’s game was the injury of Raymir Smith who had helped Pocomoke stay in the game with his shooting abilities. Smith went up for a rebound and it looked as though someone might have landed on his leg. He reentered the game, but it was clear he was in quite a bit of pain.
After the game, WiHi’s Xzavier Branyon-Sims told me they were excited to have won this game because all week people had been saying they were the underdogs. He also said, it was a great accomplishment for their team, but they are already getting focused for the Governor’s Tournament that will begin the day after Christmas.
