Pocomoke HS writes a new chapter in developing students

An area for writers to relax, share, and thrive. That’s the goal behind one of Pocomoke High School’s brand new writing center.

Tatyana Waters, a freshman student at PHS, expressed her excitement about what the new center will bring, saying “I’m very excited about the writing center, I feel like it’s a great opportunity for not just myself, but for every student at Pocomoke.”

Annette Wallace, the principal at PHS feels that a love for writing can be achieved with the right environment. “Everyone is a writer in some way, and we want to be able to create an environment where all of them can come together.” Said Wallace, she added “That’s kind of our goal to be a place where everyone can feel comfortable and come and share their story.”

It’s a place that is not a classroom, but still allows students to be productive.

Wallace also commented on how the new environment provides a nice change from the typical classroom feel saying “it gives them a flexible environment that’s a little bit different a little bit more fluid than a classroom environment so they can kind of be more relaxed and in their element.”
And “Our students are so used to just sitting in a traditional classroom behind a computer and working and I don’t think that’s an environment these days where kids work the best.”

“We want to be able to help them and give them a space where they have time and quiet to write.” Said Beth Price, the school’s English department chairperson.

In addition to providing a creative, productive, and collaborative workspace — the center may also serve another purpose which may be the most important — preparing students for college.

When asked about how the center will help students prepare for college, Price responded “The bulk of the students that we have seen that we have seen over the last month as we have been working through a soft open, have been students who are working on college applications and scholarship essays.” and
“We want Pocomoke students to go wherever they want to go and do whatever they want to accomplish.”

With the resources available at the new writing center, Pocomoke High students should have no problems turning the page, and transitioning into the next chapter of their lives.

The new writing center will be available for students to visit during four afternoons per week. One evening per week will be devoted to college application essay and scholarship application writing.
