Panel Wants Convention For VA GOP Senate Race
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Republican officials in the Virginia Senate's 24th District want to hold a convention to choose the party's nominee for the seat instead of an open primary.
Media outlets report that the Republican Legislative Committee for the 24th District asked the State Board of Election last week to allow it to hold a convention. In a letter to the board, the committee says it wants to ensure that the GOP nominee is chosen by voters who support the party.
Primary elections for party nominees in Virginia are open to all eligible voters.
Incumbent Republican Sen. Emmitt Hanger of Mount Solon tells media outlets that committee members didn't talk to him about their proposal. He says he hasn't decided whether to seek re-election.
