Georgetown woman accused of defrauding elderly couple out of $400K

A six month investigation into the theft of a large amount of money, has led to the arrest of a Georgetown woman.

Delaware State Police say in May, they were contacted by the nephew of an elderly Milton couple, who noticed some discrepancies while looking over their financial records, after the death of his aunt.

That investigation reportedly revealed that while the couple was living in Milton, they had employed a caretaker, 45-year-old Dawn Greene, of Georgetown. Greene had apparently been with the couple since June 2012.

The records reportedly showed that at one point, a check had been written to Greene for more than $5,500, for medical supplies, but the victim’s insurance covered all medical expenses. Police say they found other checks, dating back to August 2013, ranging from $550 to $5,800, that were supposed to be used to remodel and fix the couple’s kitchen, but no work was apparently ever started.

In November of 2013, Police found that a check had been written to Greene, for $21,000, which she used to buy a 2014 Ford Fusion. An audit of the financial records apparently showed that the couple had been defrauded out of $466,000 over a nine month period.

On Tuesday, Troopers arrested Greene at her home, before charging her with two counts of exploit resources greater than $50,000 of an infirmed adult, two counts of theft where property value is $100,000 or more, and conspiracy 2nd degree. She is now being held at Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $81,000 bond.
