Drive Like Your Kids Live Here

“Drive like your kids live here.”It’s a message that the city of Salisbury hopes will make you slow down, or at least make you stop and think.
Residents living on Middle and North Boulevards say the customary red stop sign isn’t cutting it anymore.

Madelyn Benn, a 10-year-old that lives on Middle Road says, “It makes us nervous when they’re driving that fast.”
Madelyn’s sister Fiona Benn agrees, “It is pretty scary, so I think it’s a really awesome thing that we have those signs.”
Neighbors say these streets get an abnormally high volume of cars, driving up and down, to beat traffic lights on South Boulevard.
Chad Pavlekovich says, “Many motorists will come down middle boulevard trying to skip that light and save time, and often just use it almost like a drag strip.”
Chad Pavlekovich has been living on Middle Boulevard for 17 years and tells 47 ABC he sees cars driving so fast that they run right through the stop signs.
Out of concern for his family, and other children in the neighborhood, folks took their concern over speeders to Mayor and in response, Jim Ireton posted these signs.
Most neighbors feel that the signs are great addition to the streets, and they’re noticing some improvement.
However, those we spoke to still feel that more could be done. For examples, suggestions that have been made include putting in a four way stop at the intersection of Middle Boulevard and Smith Street, adding speed bumps, or simply posting the speed limit.
Timothy Meagher says, “Actually posted at 25 I think that would certainly be a possibility in terms of actually putting speed limits on side streets, but at this point the city has not chosen to do that.”
When not posted, the speed limit in the City of Salisbury is set at 30 miles per hour, which is the limit on Middle and North.
However, neighbors are hoping in the meantime, these new signs will be enough to protect their families.
