Cottman Celebrates 1k Point With Win Vs. Bennett
Washington boys basketball picked up another win Monday night when they defeated James M. Bennett 111-83. The win improves the Jaguars to 3-1, while the loss drops the Clippers to 2-2.
The Jaguars would jump out a quick lead in this one as their press caused havoc for the Clippers, leading to several easy lay ins. Marc Jones and Shakur Cottman. But Bennett would stay within striking distance thanks to their star Jordan Duffy who was on fire to start. He would connect on three straight 3’s, scoring 11 of his teams first 13 points, but Washington would still take a double digit lead into the second quarter. There, Cottman would start to assert his will, scoring in transition at will, setting up his teammates for good looks, and crashing the boards for rebounds. Washington would take a 61-38 lead into the locker room.
It was a special moment to open the third quarter after Cottman connected on a tough turn around for an and 1 to eclipse 1,000 points in his career. He celebrated with his God sister at mid court, while getting applause from the home crowd.
The lead would continue to swell as Jones began to score more and more. As the game opened up, Barry Gaines would begin to find a rhythm as well. But the Clippers just couldn’t come up with enough stops down the stretch to get back into the game.
Washington was led by Cottman’s 39 points and Jones’s 24, while Duffy led the Clippers with 33 points and Gaines chipped in 22 pts. Washington returns to action tomorrow at Mardela, while Bennett travels to play Parkside on Thursday.
