No. 1 SU Field Hockey Claim CAC Tournament Title In Thriller
Salisbury, MD – The Salisbury University field hockey team pulled out a dramatic 2-1 win in overtime against Christopher Newport Saturday night to win the Capital Athletic Conference championship. The win improves the Sea Gulls to 17-1 on the season.
The Captains would strike first after Madison Doss would rip a long pass from the left side that Carol Thompson would deflect up into the air and into the back left corner of the cage. CNU would then buckle down on defense and seemed content to try and hold onto their lead. The Sea Gulls continued to press and created several scoring opportunities including a number of corners. SU would eventually draw a corner and it looked as though they were going to tie it up after Mallory Elliott took the stroke, but the Captains keeper made a tremendous play to come up with the save. The keeper finished the match with an incredible 18 saves on the night.
The second half though, Elliott would make up for it after she took a pass from Summer Washburn and rifled it home to tie the match. The teams would battle to a stand still the rest of regulation and we would head to overtime. Five minutes into the extra period, Washburn was back on the attack and would set up a wide open Chandler Littleton at the far post for the game winning goal. The score was the first of the sophomore from Parkside's career.
