Maryland and Delaware Playoff Wrap Up

A couple random thoughts on this beautiful football Sunday…

* Kent Island football is a machine. The Bucs advanced to their third state semifinal in the past four years on Friday night. The way they beat up on Easton was just a testament to their focus, discipline, and determination. I was there when the Bucs lost to Queen Anne's at home in week 10, and instead of dwelling on losing out on the #1 seed like many teams would have, the Buccaneers remained vigilant in their mission. Win the east. Kudos to Coach Sofinowski and the rest of the KI family. Do they have what it takes to get over the hump and into the title game? Kent Island gets Baltimore City royalty Dunbar in Stevensville Friday in what should be a great game. We will see.

*Cambridge is building something special. With consecutive regional championships, Coach Jake Coleman is now looking to get some state titles on to his resume. Cambridge is a program with alot of great history behind it, if they can somehow get into the title game this weekend, look out for the Vikings bring another title to Groove City.

*Sussex Tech hit a brick wall in Middletown this weekend. From the film I've seen, the Cavs dominated the game from start to finish, much of what you expect from a yearly title contender. The loss does not completely take away all that Tech accomplished this year. Won their second ever Henlopen North title and really put the state on notice when they took down state powerhouse and defending champion Salesianum. Even with the loss of All-Delaware performer Kani Kane (kid is a monster) I'd imagine Coach Mark Quillin and company will be chomping at the bit over these next nine months to back to training camp and to build on 2014's success.

*Who would have thought that in the third week of November, with only four teams still playing in the state of Delaware, one of those teams would be the Laurel Bulldogs? Yes, the Laurel Bulldogs that went 2-8 just one season ago. Laurel's pedigree has been its physicality, alot of teams who line up and hit with Laurel for the first three quarters, start curling up come the fourth. The Bulldogs' fronts wear you down with their effort and will. Now the underdawgs' get defending state champion Hodgson and perhaps the best player in the state in their quarterback Ray Jones. When I saw Jones in the preseason against Indian River I thought, man, this kid is something else. Jones is the type of player that can put a team on his back and will them to victory, as his has done so many times in the past for the Silver Eagles. But if there's one thing I've learned this year, its to never doubt the Bulldogs with their backs against the wall. Hodgson has the best player, but the best team usually wins the title. This should be a game for the ages.

…that's all for now
