Cape Survive OT Scare From Padua, Advance To Championship

Dover, DE – The Cape Henlopen field hockey team hasn't made it easy on themselves, but they are returning to the Championship match looking to defend their state title. The Vikings defeated Padua 5-4 in overtime to advance.

The momentum would be with the Pandas early on after they quickly grabbed a 3-1 lead in the first half. But just when it looked like the Vikings backs were against the wall, they responded. Erin Coverdale would score off a corner to bring her team back within one. Then just minutes later, Cape found the equalizer after Tess Bernheimer was able to put on home. The teams would be tied 3-3 at the half, but the Vikings kept coming in the second half. With 13:30 left in the match, Marlee McGinness would take a lose ball and slam it home to put her team out in front. Incredibly, the Pandas settled down and came back to tie the match with a few minutes remaining in regulation and we would head to overtime. There in the extra session, the Pandas would be called for a high stick and be forced to play a man down. The Vikings would take advantage as Samantha Broadhurst would take a feed in front of the cage and put it home to send her team onto the championship. To add to the emotions of the night, it was also Broadhurst's birthday.
