SU Field Hockey Take Thriller Over Mary Washington
Salisbury, MD – The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team pulled out a dramatic 6-5 overtime win at home Saturday afternoon over Mary Washington. The win improves the Sea Gulls to (14-1, 5-0 CAC) and clinches the CAC regular season title.
The Sea Gulls started the match on fire, scoring three goals in the first 22 minutes. It got started off a corner with Karen Cindea would take a pass to the middle and fire it home. Shortly there after, they would add another one after Summer Washburn took a shot from the top of the box that was deflected in by Courtney Jantzen. Then Washburn would put one in herself to make it 3-0 22 minutes into the match. The Eagles would score twice to make it a 1 goal game before Jantzen would add another goal before half to send the teams into the break with SU up 4-2.
The second half Mary Washington came out firing, scoring two goals in the first 9 minutes to tie it. Samantha Johnson would then find the back of the cage to re-give the Gulls the lead with 20 minutes remaining. But that was too much time for the Eagles as they would tie the match and we would head to extras. There, Johnson would be the hero for SU, scoring the game winning goal just over 3 minutes into the extra session.
SU returns to action Tuesday when they travel to play St. Mary.
