Petito’s 4 Goals Power Stephen Decatur Girls Soccer To Bayside Championship

Salisbury, MD – The Stephen Decatur Girls Soccer team took down Queen Anne's in a thriller Tuesday night 5-4 in overtime to claim the Bayside Championship. The win improves the Seahawks to 12-0-1 on the year, while the loss drops the Lions to 9-4.

The Seahawks jumped out to a quick lead after Jillian Petito would take advantage of the Lions keeper coming too far out of the box, and send a high arcing shot over her and into the goal. The Lions wasted no time and came right back though, after a corner kick found Skylar Ingram who would send it home. The Seahawks would then continue the scoring after Petito would add her second goal of the first half after Payton VanKirk chased down a deep lead ball and did a great job keeping it alive, eventually setting up Petito. The Lions would then tie the game headed into the half after Madison Ascion would send a cross home.

The scoring continued in the second half as Merry Higginbottom would give the Lions their first lead of the game at 3-2. Less than a minute later, Brigitte Ardis would tie the game up with a goal for Decatur, followed by another goal from Petito to complete her hat trick. It looked like the Seahawks were going to win in regulation before Leah Willis would tie the match at 4-4 with under 3 minutes to play. The game would go to overtime, and less than a minute into it, Lexi VanKirk on a throw in would find Petito who would turn and fire home the game winning goal.

Both teams now prepare for postseason play.
