Haunted Delmarva – Cape May Lewes Ferry
LEWES,
Del. – The Cape May Lewes Ferry is located in the first settlement in
the first state. Below your feet are between 600 to 800 buried
souls. There are many tales of who lie beneath the sand: early Dutch
settlers, murdered Native Americans, crew members of ghost ships, and
many more.
“You
wouldn't bring your kids here to the beach, because bones would float
back up again,” says Rick Coherd, CEO of Delmarva Historic Haunts.
The
ferry was built back in the 1960s, but a sign honoring the dead
below wasn't put up until the 1980's. Many say that before the sign
went up, the ghost activity was more prominent.
Rick
Lane has worked at the Ferry for over a decade, and he says keeping
an overnight staff was near impossible. “We had one lady, really
nice lady, she had only been here three or four nights. And she came
running in, threw the keys at me and told me, 'There's ghosts in
here, nobody told me that, I 'm not staying. I quit, I'm done,'”
he recounts.
Lane's
wife and kids even had an experience here. They claim a man poked
his head into Rick's office, said nothing, and left. But, he says
there wasn't anybody else on duty that night.
“We
had pictures in the front lobby and she looked at his picture and
said 'Yeah, that's him. Why is his picture up there?' and I said
'Because he passed away 7 years ago,'” says Lane.
Delmarva
Historic Haunts has done ghost readings here in the past, and we
visited a few places where they reported activity. We did our own in
the terminal, where they say they have spoken to captains and crew
members of shipwrecks of the past. We experienced high pitched
noises from one EMF reader, which shows when an electrical current
touches the machine. The belief is that ghosts emit electrical
currents. Though, nothing seemed all too convincing in real time.
But,
when I reviewed the footage later, I heard unexplained white noise at
the same time as lights on an EMF reader lit up. Rick says his
devices do not cause white noise in cameras. Coincidence, or
paranormal activity ? Its up to you to judge.
