Indian River downs Decatur in Season Opener

Berlin, MD.- The 2013 season started off in similar fashion for Indian River. Last season, the Indians took on Stephen Decatur, and gained a good lead, only for Decatur to storm back and get the victory. Coach Ray Steele said that loss in 2013 remained on their minds Friday night.”It was right in the back of our minds.”

Decatur and IR went back and forth for most of the night. IR took the early lead when KeJuan Major took a jet sweep hand off from QB Jake Hudson around the left side of the formation, juked a couple defenders and took it for a touchdown. After the kickoff, Decatur QB Justin Meekins was picked off by Indians' linebacker Andrew Foreman. Foreman returned the ball to the Decatur 2 yard line when just one play later, QB DeShawn Aiken would plunge in to give IR the 14-0 lead.

Dryden Brous would get the Seahawks on the board when he took a handoff from Meekins straight up the middle for a 24 yard TD, meeting a defender at the goal line head on. The run certainly seemed to spark Decatur because on the kickoff, IR fumbled and a couple of plays later, RJ Hayman's beautiful diving catch would knot the game up at 14 with 1:05 til the half.

Major would strike again opening the second half, taking a short screen pass from Aiken 50 yards for another explosive touchdown. After forcing Decatur to punt, IR quarterback Hudson threw an interception, and even with the good field position, the Seahawks could do nothing with it. On the next Indians possession, Shaquille Hall would take a pitch from RB Kiante Sturgis and go 75 yards to pay dirt.

Although the Seahawks would score again to make it interesting, the Indians would milk the clock and eventually get the tough victory. “This one was exciting for us, this is a Division 1 win for us.” said Indians Head Coach Ray Steele. The Indians go back on the road next week to face Smyrna High School, while Decatur's (0-1) road doesn't get any easier, they travel to Queen Anne's to take on the Lions.
