DSU Football Take Down Savannah State In MEAC Opener

Dover, Del. — Delaware State University football jumped out to an early lead Saturday against Savannah State and were able to hold on for their first win of the season 35-10. The hornets scored four touchdowns in the first quarter. The win improves their record to (1-4 1-0 MEAC).

The Hornets first scored when linebacker Kareem Leaver stripped the ball from Savannah State running back Alex Simmons, scooped up the fumble and returned it 44 yards to the house. Shortly after that, they pushed their lead to 14-0 after Lamar Shaw broke a 16 yard run to the house. On their very next drive, the Hornets made it a 3 possession game when Gilbert Rivera found Aris Scott for the touchdown.  Malik Golson then hauled in a 5 yard touchdown pass from Rivera to open the game up. Rivera finished 5-11 for 91 yards, 2 TD's and 2 INT's.

The Hornets return to action next Saturday (Oct. 4) at MEAC preseason favorite Bethune-Cookman. Game time is 4 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla. DSU returns home Oct. 18 to take on North Carolina A&T in the annual homecoming contest. Game time is 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
