#5 Wesley Handles #22 Thomas More in Season Opener
Dover, DE.- On a hot, humid, sticky day at Scott D. Miller Stadium, the fifth ranked Wesley Wolverines surrounded and smothered the 22nd ranked Thomas More Saints.
The Wolverine's junior quarterback Joe Callahan completed a career-high 77.8% of his passes as he went 28-36 for 313 yards and 4 touchdowns. Senior receiver Steve Koudossou recorded 6 catches, two of them touchdowns. Sophomore RB Jamar Baynard carried the ball 21 times for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Wesley fell behind early after going three-and-out on its opening possession, the Saints responded with a 70 yard drive, including a 39 yard touchdown pass. Callahan would find Robert Wiggs for a 49 yard touchdown on the Wolverines' next drive, and find Koudossou for a 33 yard touchdown before the end of the first quarter, and again midway thru the second quarter, giving them a 21-7 advantage at the half.
Coming out in the second half, Baynard broke an 23 yard touchdown with 6:25 left in the third, to give Wesley its biggest lead at 28-7. Thomas More would score in the third to close the gap to 14, but Callahan would find Dover High School alum Xavier Allen for his first career touchdown with five minutes remaining.
Sosthene Kapepula recorded a team-high eight tackles, while strong safety Leroy Cheatham intercepted a pass in his Wesley debut. The Wolverines travel to Route 13 rival on Saturday, September 13th, kickoff is at 6 PM.
