Security head no longer with Del. prison system after inmate riot

(AP) – The former chief of security at a Delaware prison where inmates staged a deadly riot and hostage-taking is no longer with the Department of Correction.

A DOC spokeswoman confirmed Friday that Jeffrey Carrother's employment with the prison system ended Oct. 20. She refused to provide further details as to whether Carrothers quit voluntarily or was forced out.

Carrothers was reassigned to the DOC's central administration building after the Feb. 1 riot but retained his title of correctional security superintendent.

Eighteen inmates were indicted last month for their alleged roles in the disturbance, including 16 charged with first-degree murder and assault.

All of the defendants are charged with kidnapping, riot and conspiracy in the uprising, during which correctional officer Steven Floyd was killed and three other prison workers taken hostage.
