BERLIN, Md. – Dune repairs are planned as Assateague State Park received a 1.3 million dollar contract from the Board of Public Works at the Maryland Department of Natural resources.

The funding will help to maintain the sand dunes and the dune crossings at the park.

The DNR stresses that the quality of dune crossings are important in keeping visitors off of the natural dunes, and impact the natural ecosystem of the area. Eric Luedtke is the Director of Capital Projects, and says the health of the dunes are crucial to the nearby environment.

“Those dune grasses are really important.” Said Luedtke. “Their root systems help keep the dunes in place. And they also are, habitat for wildlife. So, you know, it’s important to maintain those dune grasses. And, we do that work both at Assateague and in consultation with Ocean City itself along the Ocean City beach as well.”

Contractors hope the renovations will be complete by early spring.
