DENTON, Md. — Thread by thread and stitch by stitch — artists at the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore are turning fabric into something far more meaningful than just textiles — they’re creating art, community, and connection.

“Our mission is to preserve and teach all the fiber arts that we can. . . It includes knitting, crochet, quilt, basketry, spinning, anything that has to do with a fiber,” President of FACES Victoria McConnell said.

The center is run almost entirely by volunteers — offering workshops, unique exhibits, and classes, such as their UFO (unfinished objects) class, where members can work on a forgotten project.

McConnell says there are no limits with creativity when it comes to fiber arts. “Many people just stick with cotton, but other people go to wool, all kinds of buttons and lace and people add in leaves and paper, and you can go in all kinds of different ways.”

Whether they’re finishing old projects or starting new ones, members say fiber arts is a rewarding and therapeutic way to get creative. “We would love for people to come in, become a member, take a class, help us grow and join the community of fiber artists. We think it will lower your blood pressure — so it will make you happier, it will make you healthier, and you will find happiness in fiber arts.”
