Wor-Wic Community College accepted to NJCAA
SALISBURY, Md. — Wor-Wic Community College is one of three new institutions recently accepted into the National Junior College Athletic Association, the premier governing body for two-year collegiate athletics.
As a result, Wor-Wic will offer men’s and women’s golf in addition to men’s and women’s cross country at the Division II level beginning in the 2027–28 academic year. The college will compete in NJCAA Region 20.
“This is a transformative moment for Wor-Wic and the communities we serve,” said the college’s president, Dr. Deborah Casey. “By introducing athletics, we are not only enhancing the student experience but also strengthening regional pathways, connecting education, discipline, teamwork and, ultimately, workforce and transfer success.”
The NJCAA board of regents approved the recommendation of the membership committee during this year’s NJCAA convention in Kansas City. The addition of the Wor-Wic Dolphins further strengthens the NJCAA’s national footprint and commitment to serving student-athletes through opportunity, access and competition.
Michael Hutmaker, vice president of student affairs, said intercollegiate athletics will bring new opportunities to campus, as Wor-Wic was the only community college in Maryland not to offer college sports.
“Hopefully, we’ll be building relationships and pathways for these student-athletes to continue at a four-year school and pursue athletic endeavors, using Wor-Wic as a starting point to get their academic foundation set and then transferring after they earn their degree, possibly continuing to play athletics,” Hutmaker said.
Athletics will also broaden the applicant pool at Wor-Wic, as some high school graduates may not be ready to give up their sport. The addition of sports will help build school spirit for the Dolphins.
“This is another opportunity for them to continue pursuing their careers and academic degrees while also continuing with something they’ve loved for the last 10 to 15 years of their lives,” Hutmaker said.
“The NJCAA is excited to welcome these three new members to our association,” said Dr. Brett Monaghan, NJCAA vice president of championships, membership and sports governance. “As each institution worked through our new member process, it became apparent to our campus visit teams and membership committee that each of these schools aligned well with the NJCAA’s mission and values. We look forward to continuing to assist them as they develop their individual athletic departments.”
