SALISBURY, Md. — As the Salisbury University Class of 2026 gets ready to throw on their caps and gowns, art students are putting down their paint brushes and cameras and hanging up their work at the 74th Biannual Senior Art Exhibition.

In their final semester as Gulls, art students completed their capstone exhibition course, taught by Professor Jinchul Kim, who says it’s their send off into post-grad life.

“It’s a body of work that consists of any range from 20-15 pieces, so they are ready to apply to graduate school or find a gallery or apply for a teaching job. . . They wanted to use their skill and before they graduate, one last time, they want to practice this professionalism. That’s what the senior exhibition is about.”

Painter Olivia Spencer says she wanted to create something that represents her and her artistic journey. “So behind me there’s nine MDF paintings that I’ve cut to curate specific memories, and these memories have shaped me to be the individual I am today.”

For graphic designer Justin Bullock, seeing his final body of work on display is a reminder of what it took to get there. “For my work, it’s definitely the teachers and professors that helped me curate my style and artistic voice. . . Without them, I definitely would not be where I’m standing right now.”

Both Spencer and Bullock say supporting each other along the way was critical in their development as artists. “In the art field, depending on each other is very important. We’re a community. And if you’re working on something and it’s not working for you, asking your peer for advice is really helpful and we just lean on each other,” Spencer said.

Although graduating is bittersweet, they know bigger and better things are coming.

“I’ve had a great journey at SU and I kind of don’t want it to end, but I know there’s better things out there,” Spencer said.
