Discover Delmarva Arts: Veronique Diriker
SALISBURY, Md. — For artist Veronique Diriker, creativity has no limits — just endless visions waiting to be brought to life. Growing up in Paris, Veronique was surrounded by art, but she didn’t pick up a paintbrush until a few years ago.
“There’s art, public art, everywhere. Walking around Paris, you see sculptures and monuments, and you see incredible architecture — so it really inspires you to be more creative yourself,” Dirkier said.
In her studio, no mediums are off limits. “I really thoroughly enjoy drawing [and] painting. I use different mediums: I use acrylic paint, I use markers, I use colored pencils, and oil paints.”
Veronique’s home, filled with her art, serves as a living gallery of her imagination — with pops of her favorite color, red, adding a signature to nearly every corner. But Veronique’s artistic journey didn’t come without challenges.
“About five years ago, I developed some weakness in my dominant hand. So, I saw a doctor who diagnosed me with a large brain tumor, and after I was operated on, my dominant hand was very, very weak.”
Veronique says that making art was a form of physical therapy for her during that difficult time, helping her gain motion back in her hand one paint stroke at a time. It was those obstacles that helped shape her purpose and define her voice as an artist.
Now, Veronique uses her art to make sure others have the chance to create their own — supporting artists with disabilities through her fund at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore. “I really wanted to help people that have creative minds and creative hands do something and be able to market their work.”
