Energy bill could provide full cost analysis MD legislators before approving fiscal plans

Annapolis, Md. – Energy bill costs have been at the forefront at Maryland’s General Assembly this year, and State Senator Mary Beth Carozza says her bill would help keep consumers by allowing legislators to make informed decisions about energy costs.

“When families open their electric bill, they don’t care about policy debates — they care about whether they can afford it,” Carozza said.

Carozza said Senate Bill 270, a bipartisan effort, would make the Public Service Commission perform a full cost and benefits analysis on sources of electricity generation and report its findings and recommendations to both the House and Senate committees devoted to energy.

“It’s an energy bill that would require the Public Service Commission to do a full cost benefit analysis to individual energy sources to see how much this is really costing the ratepayers,” Carozza told WMDT. “So, that as we go forward with our energy generation, it’s making sure we have the lowest cost and the greatest benefit to the ratepayers.”

Senate Bill 2-70 has passed in the Senate and has been referred to the House Environment and Transportation Committee with a hearing set for Thursday at 1 p.m.
