MD Eastern Shore schools could be designated Purple Star Schools

Annapolis, Md. – State Senator Mary Beth Carozza (R – District 38, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester Counties) is sponsoring legislation that would recognize educational institutions going above and beyond to support military service members and their families.

Senate Bill 709 is a bipartisan effort to recognize schools providing services that strongly support for military connected students. The bill would alter the definition of “military-connected student” under the Purple Star School Program and recognize certain Eastern Shore colleges and universities that provide major support for military-connected students. Approved in the 2022 Maryland General Assembly, the Purple Star School Program is a state-run program meant to honor schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families.

“That is going to allow Warwick Community College, University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, and Salisbury University to be designated as Purple Star Schools,” Carozza said. “And what that means is they will be recognized for the services they provide to veterans and our military families. And what that means is they will be recognized for the services they provide to veterans and our military families.”

Carozza said these institutions all do an excellent job of supporting Eastern Shore military service members and veterans as they pursue careers “here on the shore.”
