Cambridge Public Works Discusses Impact of Cedar St. Sinkhole
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – If you drive through Cambridge, then getting to one side of the city is a little more tricky right now following the opening of a sinkhole on Cedar Street.
Crews have been hard at work through the latter half of the week to close the hole so that Cedar Street can be re-opened.
Public Works Director, Wayne Suggs says this sinkhole was cause by a weathered stormwater pipe leaking and creating a 20 foot by fifty foot hole to open up in an intersection.
And as we found out from Public Works, this has caused some closures for other roads to handle detour traffic.
“The detour we originally had them detour, just one block out, but that street couldn’t handle the amount of volume. So we detoured them to a larger street. So that’s why you see the additional closures…” says Suggs.
The city has also put out a notice that they are temporarily opening the road on Cedar Street for traffic this weekend.
With Suggs saying they’ve backfilled the sinkhole and put plates over the streets.
And that he understands how much of a strain this puts on drivers simply trying to get around town.
He says, “We are aware that Cedar Street is one of the three major gateways into town and this is a major disruption and we’re doing everything we can to try and get it repaired as quickly as possible.”
Public Works says they’re working to have Cedar Street re-opened by Friday, July 18th, but drivers are urged to plan different routes through the week.
